Everyone welcome!!!

People often ask us "Why do you Relay". Here is Nicola's reason for Relaying.
This is our Dad Jimmy Daly.
On 5th December 2009 Dad was diagnosed with multiple myeloma a form of cancer which until that day we had never heard of.
Dad had been sick for many years before but never really given a proper diagnosis.
To hear the words 'your Dad has cancer' rocked the foundations of our lives. Even though he was 80 at the time, it didn't matter he was still our Dad and Grandad to our kids. Dads chemotherapy began straightaway but we were never given a prognosis for him due to his age and previous health problems.
He travelled to Waterford for his chemo and always remained strong and saw his visits to the hospital as a day out where he could chat away to the nurses and doctors and have a bit of craic with them.
On Saturday the 17th April 2010 exactly one month past his 81st birthday Dad passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family, friends, neighbours and his dog Diesel. We were all devastated at his loss but we were grateful of the time we had with him and and although it was very tough we were glad that we were Dads carers throughout his illness.
As a family we stood by one another and supported each other as we all grieved in different ways. Coming up to Dads first anniversary my sister Majella had heard about Relay For Life which had taken place in Carlow for the first time in 2010 and she approached our Mam about taking part in 2011 to celebrate and remember Dads life and to raise awareness and money for the Irish Cancer Society. We got together with our cousin Bernie and very quickly realised that this was much bigger than our immediate family that unfortunately all of our extended families had been touched by cancer.
In 2011 Team Sweet Delights was born and we participated in our first Relay For Life in Ducketts Grove, Carlow. The experience of those 24 hours was one we will never forget. No words can explain what Relay For Life does for families. It is an opportunity to meet other people who have gone through or are going through the same ordeal as you. It is a great healing experience to be surrounded by amazingly brave people who are fighting for their lives with such strength and dignity. We also know how to have fun and the 24 hours although solemn at times is very much a fun filled experience.
Please come along to Relay For Life 2015 on the 20th and 21st June in Ducketts Grove Carlow and experience this for yourself. It is coming up to Dads third anniversary and I will never tire of telling our story as i believe every time i tell it another person is aware of the wonderful work that Relay For Life does.
That is why I Relay
Relay For Life celebrates cancer survivors. The event starts with a Survivor Lap around the track.

Relay For Life cannot happen without Teams. If you have a group of 12-15 like minded friends who want to do something to support the fight against cancer in Ireland (while having some great fun along the way), why not enter a team for Relay.
This year Majella Owens & Nicola Doyle are looking after Team Recruitment and they are just waiting to hear from you so please email them at
teams@relayforlifecarlow.ie or complete the enquiry form to the right and they will be in contact with you in due course.
After dark, we honour people who have been touched by cancer and remember loved
ones lost to the disease during the Candle of Hope Ceremony. Candles are lit
inside bags of sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer,
and participants walk a lap in silence.
As people take time to remember, those who have walked alongside others battling
cancer can grieve and find healing. This is a time that truly highlights the
importance of defeating this disease.
Candle Of Hope is a time for us all to reflect on those who have lost their
battles with cancer and to nurture within ourselves a sense of hope for success
in the ongoing battle against cancer. It is a chance to consider the research
work being carried on on our behalf and to remember those nameless people
working on our behalf to improve the diagnosis and treatment of all forms of
cancer throughout the world.
At Relay For Life 2014, 5500 candle bags lined our track. A community came
together to remember its loved ones in a most reverent and moving way.
As with all events, we need volunteers to help make the event a success.
If you can give us any amount of your time either before or during the event (or both), we would love to hear from you.
Please email
volunteer@relayforlifecarlow.ie and we will be in contact with you to discuss how you can help make Relay For Life Carlow a great success.

Relay For Life is a community based initiative in support of the
Irish Cancer
Society and their work in patient support and research. Relay is a 24-hour
team fundraising event. The event is based around a walking track and at all
times during the event at least one person from each team is walking on the
track. Each team has a cancer awareness theme which they promote at their team
base. The teams also run fundraising events on the day. Relay is all about:-
- Celebrate – During our opening
Survivor lap, we celebrate our community based survivors and their successes in
living with their illnesses
- Remember – During the
Candle Of Hope ceremony,
we remember those from our community who have lost their battle against their
illness
- Fight Back – After sunrise, we
begin the fight back against cancer. This is reflected in the provision of
support information for people attending our Relay event
